Tuesday, June 6: Casual wakeup this morning since my mt bike was at the Red Rocks shop awaiting the mechanics to install yet another brake system. Well, we got Dave’s place nice and clean and then we all headed down to the bike shop to kind of wait for the bike, then take off from there. Wasn’t too much longer for them to have the bike ready and we were off on the road by about 10:30 AM for our drive to NV. Took Rt 18 north out of St. George, then onto Rt 56 west to the NV border which turned into 319 west, to Rt 93 north, to Rt 50 west to Eureka. Made it in about 6 hours.

So we decided to get a place in Eureka, the very same place we stayed at during that fateful day in May last year. Man it was kind of freaky heading back there, kind of reliving that crazy day. Saw the little med clinic we went to, the motel, the restaurant, everything. Just brought back all these memories of last May. Got the room then busted out west to the same place I began the final ride from 2016. This will by Judy’s pick-up point for tomorrow’s ride.

That alone is about 50 miles southwest of Eureka, and 20 of that is down this lonely gravel road, Monitor Valley Rd. Just wanted to make sure Judy knew exactly where to pick us up. Good thing we did because the name of that road is different on the NV gazetteer than it is on my car’s Garmin GPS. Interestingly enough my cycling Garmin lists it as Belmont Rd, as does the gazetteer. Sometimes it’s maddening trying to coordinate with such discrepancies in road names. Dave did a ride south on Monitor Rd as I went down the full 20 miles with Judy to firm up the pick-up point. And again, there was a discrepancy in the road names.

Got that all dialed in, picked Dave up and back we went to the motel. Dave and Judy went to the grocery while I sit here and catch up. So not really a lot to say today other than how surreal it feels for me to be back in this place after my med issue last May. I especially felt that weird feeling down at the end of the 20-mile gravel road, where I’d begun that final ride last year.

I’m really looking forward to getting tomorrow’s ride going just so I can kind of move forward from here. Until tomorrow…..
